I'm a copywriter because I believe in the power of words

As a freelance writer, it’s no surprise that I enjoy crafting the finest sentences. But I also love asking questions, getting to know a business inside out, and helping my clients tell their story with real impact (yes, it’s about you not me). Words create change. And I think that’s the most amazing thing.

I’m Laura Jane Johnson. As a freelance copywriter I work with small businesses, big business, established brands and new ventures. I help them to create the changes they want most. How do I do this? By providing a wide range of writing services, covering marketing, communications, PR, business development, journalism, digital copywriting, and social media content creation. I’m based near Birmingham in the UK.

I’ve worked on new product launches, blog strategies, social media campaigns, email marketing and website refreshes. I’ve delivered PR plans, driven thought leadership projects, devised internal communications plans, and refreshed brands by giving them a completely new tone of voice.

I’ve composed press releases, devised straplines, developed staff magazines, and written editorial and features on far too many topics to list. My content for awards submissions has led to trophies and I’ve produced numerous winning pitches. I’ve even written scripts for animations and been a roving reporter at corporate events.

What’s my story?

Fresh out of university in 2002, I was unsure what my career would be. I knew I wanted to be creative. I was interested in the commercial world and how business works. But most of all, I wanted my work to involve words. This gradually led me into an early career in marketing, which I’ve now refined further by becoming a freelance copywriter – in particular in the digital space.

I’ve been a self employed copywriter since 2009. I’m also a director of Timecode Systems Limited, a broadcast technology company.

Before going freelance and focusing on copywriting, I worked in a variety of marketing roles, mainly in the professional services sector.

But there’s more to me 

I live near Birmingham with my husband Mike (a talented freelance television camera operator/supervisor ), and our two daughters. I love running, dabble with yoga, and can be a bit of a nutrition nerd. Not at my desk? I’m probably chasing my little people around a park, watching them at swimming lessons, or even better, in Cornwall catching some sea air or snowboarding in the Alps. If you’re putting on the kettle, I’ll always say yes. And if you’re opening a bottle of wine, get me a glass.
